Feb 2010: Who’s Who Last Month

Last month we welcomed a few new bloggers to our directory. If you are just tuning in be sure and add these bloggers to your news reader OR bookmark them so you can check them out when you have some time. That’s the best part about networking, to me, is getting to discover new blogs and meet new bloggers.

Here’s a listing of who was introduced last month:

The most popular trending topics last month were:

Here are the Best of the rest too! : )

I can’t wait to see who will join our blog directory this month. I get excited when I meet new bloggers and get to read new blogs. Don’t You? : )

Happy Birthday, Angela!

Tomorrow is a milestone for our dear, sweet, Angela – Happy 40th! I love you!

Angela,
You are an amazing woman! I am honored to call you a friend. We’ve known each other in this land called blog for many years and through that time I have gotten to know a lot about you and your family. Through ups and downs, through good and bad, one thing I have always admired about you is your determination to make it all work and your drive to constantly give God the glory. You are a beautiful person and I am beyond blessed to know you.

I love you, sister!
:)

Tues Tip Jar: Slow To Load & Keeping Readers

If you could do something nice for your blog buddies one thing would be to let them know if their blog is taking forever to load. I could not keep something like this from any of my blog friends because I know what can happen when a blog takes forever to load. I know because I am someone that doesn’t have a lot of time on my hands. So…if your blog takes forever to load and I am your friend…I’m gonna tell ya!

You have aproximately 5 seconds, give or take, for your readers to decide if your post or your blog is worth visiting. When somebody clicks through, the first thing that may have attracted them to your blog right from the git-go are the following:

1.) The Name of Your Blog: The name of your blog is important because it’s the first thing a person is going to retain if everything else about your blog is of interest while under serious consideration.

2.) The Title of Your Post: The title of your post is important because in the first couple of seconds it takes to read it, the reader has already decided based on that point alone if they are going to bother with the first few sentences of your post. Why? Because time is of the essence and they have several hundred more blogs to read.

3.) The First Few Sentences: The first few sentences of your post are equally as important as the post title because a lot of the time, serious blog readers have attempted to try you out by adding you to their news reader. In order to get your readers to click through to your post you need to capture their attention. Literally capture it!

4.) Page Loading Time: Out of everything that I have listed so far I think page loading time has the power to do A LOT. Page Loads and how long they take will make you or break you. Let’s face it – we live in a society that doesn’t have a lot of time to spend waiting for your page to load. If your page takes forever to load people are going to throw their hands up and go to the next blog.

We don’t want people to throw their hands up. We want people to read your blog, be interested in what you are writing about AND become a FAN of YOUR BLOG.

If people have told you that your blog is slow loading one way to figure out what is bogging it down is to try pulling it up using Mozilla Firefox. When a site is loading up on Mozilla, if you gaze towards the bottom left hand side of the page, you will begin to see a listing of sites where data is trying to transfer. It’s the transferring of data that really slows things down. Typically that information will pop up due in part to widgets and if you look towards that bottom left hand corner you will see which sites the data is being transferred to.

If you are a fan of widgets in your sidebar just know that this is a loading hazard and the more widgets you use the worse it becomes and the longer it takes for your blog to load. It used to be that images slowed a page down but that’s just not the case now that more and more people are on a high speed connection. It’s the Widgets that you want to pay attention to – the widgets and everything in your sidebar.

So ask yourself this – why the widget? Is it because you want people to know that you are interested in that site or that you belong to that site? If that’s the case then you are better off deleting the widget and creating a section in your sidebar or a page (depending on your blogging platform) strictly for that purpose. A text link will go a long way AND it won’t make your page slow to load.

Take for example my blogs Domestic Divapalooza and I Am Pooped – I have a section titled “Angela’s Stuff” – So instead of putting up the Facebook widget, you could put up the link to your Facebook page from “Your Stuff” and/or list whatever networking program you belong to instead of adding their widget. Trust me when I say that too many widgets on your blog is a complete and total loading problem.

Before I end this post I would just like to say that I love it when people write and tell me something that bugs them about any or all of my blogs. I wish more people would tell me what they think because maybe there is something wrong with my blog and I’ll never know it because nobody will tell me? I tend to try and give the type of help that I want people to help me with. With that stated, I hope that if you see something that bugs you about my blogs that you will tell me and do so right away! Until next time – HaPpY BlOgGiNg!!!!

My Kid has Autism

What does it mean when I tell you my kid has Autism?

  • It means I am trusting you with something very personal.
  • It means your understanding would be appreciated.
  • It means you don’t need to stare at him if he starts to spin in circles, talk to his hands, flick his fingers, or howl.
  • It means that our house is his safety zone and you need to understand that.
  • I means if I tell you to stop doing something then you really need to stop because when it comes to my kid I know way more than you do.
  • It means that it may take him a while to get used to you and you need to get over yourself if you can’t handle that he goes and “hides” when you come around.
  • It means that while he may be different he is not broken.

What does it NOT mean when I tell you my kid has Autism?

  • It does not mean he is sick.
  • It does not mean we need your pity.
  • It does not mean he is retarded. (And really, learn the real meaning of that term, please!)
  • It does not mean he is void of emotion.
  • It does not mean he can’t talk – he may just not want to talk to you.
  • It does not mean he is contagious.
  • It does not mean he can’t play with your kids.
  • It does not mean he is Rainman.

Society’s Ignorance

I received an email this morning that really ticked me off. I considered replying to the “mommy blog” that sent it out, but after giving myself time to calm down I decided that the type of ignorance being displayed by the women who write for that blog and by the majority of those who comment on it would lend them to being completely unresponsive to intelligent thought. So here I am voicing my opinion on my blog – after all, that’s what blogs are for.

The email contained two links:

The first link was to an article about how Dr. Andrew Wakefield “faked” his results in his studies of the relationship between Autism and vaccines – most notably the MMR vaccine. “Faked” is not my term – it is theirs. Whether or not you agree that vaccines cause Autism is not the issue here. What ticks me off is that so many people don’t seem to understand that the debate about vaccines in the Autism community is not limited to the MMR – the problem is with the entire vaccine schedule and the ridiculous amounts of toxins and byproducts included in these vaccines. It starts from birth with the Hep B shot and continues on. It isn’t just thimerosal, it is also aluminum, sheep blood cells, monkey cells, chicken embryos, cells from aborted human fetal tissue, formaldehyde, and the list goes on! Don’t believe me, CLICK HERE.

The second link was to an article about the hidden dangers in cosmetics. It discussed things like formaldehyde and other toxins that are in things like your perfume or heck, your foundation! Oh no! Toxic chemicals in your lip stick!!! Seriously! This was on THE SAME BLOG!

So why was I ticked off? Because we live in a society where people are more concerned about what might be in their foundation than what they inject into their children! A society that cares about hormones injected into cattle, but not about poison injected into babies! A society concerned with pesticides on plants, but not caring about cells from aborted human fetal tissue getting injected into their kids! A society that will fight tooth and nail to remove a toxic chemical from a plastic water bottle that you drink from but that stands idly by watching known POISONS go into the bodies of their children. This is the ignorance that surrounds us!

I’m not saying don’t get vaccinated. What I’m saying is stop the hypocrisy and get informed. A commenter on that blog called the vaccine link to Autism a “hoax” – fine, if she wants to feel that way then fine. But don’t then turn around and ask me to care about what may or may not be used in the creation of your toddler’s spoon. Do you get my point here?

How can people care so much about cosmetics and plastic bottles and so little about their kids? I just don’t get it.

Tues Tip Jar: Blog Sized Spring Cleaning

When was the last time you took a look at your blog and really cleaned it up a bit? I think it’s always a good idea to give your blog the stink eye at least once a month. I try to do this on the first day of each month. You might feel comfortable picking your own day. Some bloggers do this every quarter, every six months, or once a year.

Here are some things that I look for when I’m looking to clean up my blog:

1.) Does it take forever for my blog to load? If so, I might need to scale back on some of the widgets and pictures that I don’t really care to use. You know, the ones that really do not make a difference in improving the look and feel of my blog. I tend to hang on to only the buttons that promote networking. Everything else I can link to from a “resources” type of page.

2.) Go through your blog rolling links. Those are the bloggers you are networking with that understand the importance of what blog rolling is all about. Make sure you are getting a fair shake. If you want to link to somebody but don’t really care if they link back to you or not then save their URL for your “resources” page. This will clean up the front of your blog considerably and you’ll be able to focus on linking to those blogs that understand the importance of networking and what that can do to help all of you to increase your traffic. I find brand new blogs to read by checking out somebody’s blog roll. I Love It!

3.) One thing I’ve been doing lately is making sure that the links on the front of my blog open up into a new page. This will keep folks from losing their place. Wordpress recently offered this in their “links” section and I absolutely Love it!

4.) Ask a close online friend to give your blog a once over OR you might even post this question to your readers via a blog post. Ask them to be honest with you and give you some constructive feedback as to what they see and how easy or not it might be to get around your blog.

5.) Take a look at your blog and make sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to by going to it in three or four different web browsers. If you have friends that use IE and you use Fire Fox or vice versa, maybe you can ask them to take a look to make sure nothing in the template is out of whack. You would be amazed at how many discrepancies you can pick up just by having somebody else check things out via their web browser.

I would like to know what you do to clean up your blog! Did I miss something? If you found this post helpful please leave a comment. I Love Comments. I also want to hear from other bloggers as to how they run their blogs and whether or not you guys clean up your blogs from time to time and what it is you do to keep things tidy in your neck of the Blog-o-sphere.

After you leave a comment here on Blogs Rule [Blog Directory], head on over to BlogMommas.com and check out her Tues Tip Jar.
